The cement absorbs the moisture from the climate and may become purposeless for the construction work so it should be stored precisely. Following precaution points to be considered for storage of cement.
Moisture
Moisture should be kept away from cement to maintain quality of cement over a long period. If moisture absorption surpasses 5% the cement becomes purposeless. So cement should be stored in airtight containers.
Storage Period
The cement should be stored in airtight containers but avoid storing loose cement in jute bags for more than 3 months.
Stacking of Cement Bags
Cement should be stacked 10 bags of cement pile. The distance between the piles of cement bags and the walls should be 300 mm. The passage distance between piles of cement should be 900 mm. For storage of cement for a long period, the top and bottom of piles should be covered with water-proof paper.
Quality of Cement
Finely ground cement actively absorbs the moisture from the climate. So special precautions should be taken to store cement which is finely ground.
Withdrawal of Cement
When cement bags withdraw from the piles of cement, take two or three bags from the front pile. It is also advisable to remove the cement which is stored previously.
Storage Sheds
For long storage of cement, the construction of the storage shed should be waterproofed. Small window should be given and the floor should be above the ground.
